Growing up we always called it rabbit fever. I was taught that if a rabbit wasn't skittish then be sure kill it and don't handle it because that was a symptom of rabbit fever. As I got older I realized that rabbits are mostly just too dumb to be scared of humans. I left a lot of dead rabbits for the crows and possums.

I was also toldas a kid to never clean a rabbit with any open cuts or sores on my hands. Which of course, when you’re a kid might be all the friggin time?
