View Full Version : Scope help
You can pick only one scope,
1) 4-12x40. Medium range quality. Leupolds entry level scope
2) 3.5x10x50. Leupolds mid level scope.
I already know larke’s answer. He gonna say the 50mm
The 4.5-14 is a vx freedom
The 3.5-10 is a vx3i

Like Cap, I'm a 50 mm guy.....and, with all the flat land here in the Delta, a variable 6 x 24 is my power preference.

Having owned both my answer would be the same as the Captains.

I’m not a huge fan of the entry level Leuoolds. While they may be very reliable, I think the light gathering capability is better in other options in the same price range. I also rarely adjust the power in my variable scopes. I basically leave it in 4x 95% if the time for the kind of hunting I typically do.

Hank, I would like a little more magnification than the 3x9x40 i have now.
You’ve seen those eastern shore corn and bean fields.... there are plenty of 400-500 yard shots.
I’m leaning towards the vx3 even though it’s $100 more than the 4-12
Where I hunt the 4x12 would be more than I need, also like the better Leupold.
I agree with CD
Hey sky,
Was the clarity in low light substantially different between the two?
For me, that’s as important as the zoom.

I'm pretty much with CD. I had a trainload of Leupold 3X9's and had one mounted on quite a few of my long guns. I seldom switched off of 4X for the type hunting I usually did.

You get approximately 10 more minutes of clear shooting light. For its worth it. I've killed a lot of critters in that first and last minute or two of light.

Sold! Thank you.
Recommend anything other than that vx3 3-9-50 that’s better, in the same price range?
I have 3 of the VX-3I’s with the CDS and really like them, I would look at a Burris Fullfield II before I would look at the Freedom for the money.
Trav, it’s $299 for the freedom vs $399 for the vx3.
One of The MAIN problems is i cannot decide whether I want 14x, or potentially better clarity.
Sky gave me my answer, pretty sure.
Other side item is I am buying two, not one. So it’s a $200 difference.
The 3 VX-3I’s I bought this year were $539 each so it sounds like you are getting a good deal.

I think you should forget either one of them and buy the scope I have for sale. ;-)

Too late! Ordered two of them today!
I’ll give you $24 for yours though, if you cover the shipping.
